The following are taken from written comments made
by visitors to Mario Castillo’s solo exhibition, “Nagualism”
held at Mac Murray College’s Mobil Art Gallery, Jacksonville,
IL from 11-5-94 to 11-26-94. Comment #6 refers to the largest
painting at exhibit, “Terrestrial Iconography”. This
mural size painting makes use of ancient art images from throughout
the world and continues to demonstrate Castillo’s concern
for an artistic fusion of world cultures. In a philosophical way,
it is a response to Marshall McLuhan's’s theories about the
earth becoming a global village. This work is painted with semen-acrylic
and is one of the largest paintings making use of Castillo’s
unique style of Perceptualism. It also pays tribute to the first
multicultural mural, “The Wall of Brotherhood” which
Mario Castillo (who was then a student at the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago) created during the summer of 1969 in Chicago’s
Pilsen Mexican community on 18th Street.
1. The most magnificent painting with ethereal, spirituality
feeling I have ever seen. Complete movement of the universe that
can be experienced and I am still understating.
2. Thank you for sharing the gift of unity-the ancient with
the present.
3. I hope to see you again at the museum. Wish we could afford
your mural for here.
4. Excellent display of many different cultures, vibrant and
exciting, a wonderful piece.
5. I find also overtones of Diego Rivera both in the symbolism
and the mural work
